About the International Aspirin® Award
Bayer HealthCare created the International Aspirin® Award in 1995 to honor work in the field of Aspirin® research that opens up new indications for acetylsalicylic acid. This important award is endowed with the sum of Euro 20,000 and has one aim above all others, namely to kindle scientists’ creativity and initiative. The results must have been published in an international, peer-reviewed (= reviewed by experts), scientific journal within the past two years or their publication must be pending.
A committee of eight internationally acclaimed experts from different medical specialties, acting independently of Bayer HealthCare, selects the prizewinners on the basis of set criteria. The chairman of this scientific committee, Professor Jürgen Meyer, was formerly Chair of General Medicine / Cardiology and Director of Medical Hospital II at the University of Mainz. As he explains, “In the selection process, we see the entire spectrum of potential new uses for ASA. The award gives key impetus and further fosters scientists’ curiosity. In recent years, the International Aspirin® Award has crucially furthered our knowledge of ASA."
